Based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Kate Hedin and David Rehm are world-renowned Balboa instructors and Swing dance historians who specialise in Balboa and Bal-Swing.
Kate is a world-class Balboa instructor celebrated globally for her analytical, music-first approach to teaching the dance. Drawing from her background as a conservatory-trained musician, she breaks down complex syncopations, precise footwork and subtle weight shifts with exceptional clarity. As an instructor, Kate is a powerful advocate for follower autonomy and styling, teaching dancers how to maintain a flawless connection while expressing their own rhythmic voice. Her instructional style focuses heavily on the mechanics of body movement versus stepping, making her one of the most sought-after educators for dancers looking to elevate their technique from basic execution to artistic expression.
David is an elite Balboa educator renowned for his highly technical and structural approach to teaching the dance's unique partner connection. Best known as the mastermind behind The Balboa Experiment, a prestigious, immersive residency programme he founded in 2006, David revolutionized how high-level Balboa is taught by shifting the focus toward intensive peer feedback and deep mechanical analysis. His instruction emphasises the preservation of classic, efficient vintage movement, helping students master the close-position intimacy of Pure Balboa as well as the dynamic turns of Bal-Swing.
